The National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) is launching the tender for School Direct (Early Years) allocation of places to lead organisations for 2015 recruitment. The tender opens at 09:00 on 3 November 2014.

School Direct (Early Years) is a new delivery method for Early Years initial teacher training (ITT) introduced in 2014. The government’s ambition to improve the status and quality of the early education and childcare workforce is set out in More Great Childcare (Jan 2013), and includes the introduction of Early Years Teachers. Early Years Teachers are specialists in early childhood development, trained to deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage for children from birth to age 5.

Early Years initial teacher training (ITT) leads to the award of Early Years Teacher Status. This is seen as equivalent to QTS as the entry requirements to Early Years ITT are the same as those for entry to primary teacher training, including the completion of the literacy and numeracy professional skills tests.

School Direct (Early Years) will therefore lead to the award of Early Years Teacher Status.  This delivery method will give schools and nurseries the opportunity to recruit and select trainees and engage in the design and delivery of Early Years ITT programmes with accredited ITT training providers.

All training is fully funded and bursaries will be available to eligible trainees.

The requirement to submit a tender must demonstrate the criteria in the invitation to tender and include evidence of the following:

  • Birth to 5 teaching experience
  • Signed Partnership Agreement for delivery with an accredited ITT Provider who has been allocated places for the Graduate Entry Early Years ITT route leading to the award of Early Years Teacher Status for September 2015

or you are a School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) offering Early Years ITT leading to the award of EYTS for September 2015.

  • Ability to offer placements throughout the birth to 5 age range and at Key Stage 1
  • Delivery plan showing how the programme will enable trainees to meet the Teachers’ Standards (Early Years)
  • How the lead school/nursery will manage the programme from recruitment of suitable trainees through to expectation of employment at the end of training.

If your school/nursery already meets the evidence required above or you are able to do so by the closing date of 09:00 Monday 1 December 2014, please read on for further information about registration to our procurement system, which will contain full details of the specification and other supporting information. This is followed by an invitation to join an on line telephone information event to learn more about School Direct (Early Years).
